As a neighborhood fundraiser. Every resident or vendor who sells donates a percentage of sales to their Civic League in order to maintain the neighborhood infrastructure. This includes the historic fountains, flower urns, streetlight lampposts, town hall, esplanades, statuary and 10th Street fence.
Woodruff Place borders Tech HS and was the first planned residential suburb of Indianapolis. It is on the National Register of Historic Places. Victorians line the streets with esplanades featuring fountains and statuary. It is located one mile east of downtown.
The vibe is eclectic, from heavy hauls to just enjoying the atmosphere. During the sale there are porch parties and people playing live music on porches and in yards, Kids roam the neighborhood as well as adults. Some children set up their own booths or stands and learn entrepreneurial skills, from selling drinks to reselling and up charging toys. Artists sell work as well as paint/draw live. Woodruff is also home to the studio of painter, Rosanna Hardin Hall. There is also that house with the Superman underwear dressed mannequin bottom! This year it received a new pair and the old pair was for sale. One yard featured a dunk tank with kids that were enthusiastic about being dunked. Pets are walked, pushed, carried and in backpacks, such as Chester the kitten. Some purchased antique bikes to ride around the sale and or carry items. Pickle lemonade, by Frankie, was found this year as well as the best pound cake you've ever tried! Beyond food made by residents, the center has plenty of food trucks and brewers. And at 3 o'clock, EVERYBODY DANCES!
The three boulevard drives consist of East, Middle and West Drives with large fountains in the center of each. Every drive features different cultural backgrounds of statuary, types of houses and unique landscaping, yet it creates a unique cohesiveness in this friendly neighborhood they call Woodruff Place.
If you missed it, an all-you-can-eat fish fry is coming up Saturday, June 28! Presale tickets are available online at woodruffplace.org
